EMV Debit & Credit Card FAQs
EMV Debit & Credit Cards FAQ
Please refer to the following questions and answers regarding your WPCCU debit and credit cards with EMV technology.
What is EMV?
EMV (Europay, MasterCard®, Visa®) is micro-computer chip technology that provides increased security capability. EMV chip cards are equipped with a small metallic computer chip that holds your card information.
Why is WPCCU adopting EMV technology?
WPCCU is implementing EMV technology to ensure you have the most secure purchase experience possible. EMV technology is currently one of the most effective tools being used to prevent the spread of debit card fraud. EMV chip cards help to ensure that your card information remains protected, and makes it more difficult for criminals to obtain your data.
Can I change my Personal Identification Number (PIN)?
Yes, you can select a new PIN by calling our Pin-By-Phone automated service at 877-746-6746. Please allow 2 business days for new PINs to take effect.
Can I use my card at a retailer/merchant who does not have a chip-activated terminal?
Yes, you can continue to use the magnetic stripe on the back of the card as you do today at merchants that do not yet have chip-enabled terminals. Simply swipe your card and enter your PIN or sign for the transaction.
Will I need to update my card information with merchants who automatically bill my card?
Yes, please be sure to update your new card information with all merchants who use your card for recurring payments. Your new chip card will have a new debit card number, expiration date and CVC code.
When should I activate my new card?
Your new card should be activated AFTER you receive your new PIN.
How will my new chip card work?
If the merchant has a chip-enabled terminal, you will insert your card into the slot at the bottom of the machine and enter your PIN. If the terminal is not chip-enabled, you will be able to swipe your card and enter a PIN or sign for your purchase.
Will my new chip card also have the magnetic stripe?
Yes, your new chip card will include the magnetic stripe on the back. You will be able to use your chip card at merchants who support chip processing and the magnetic stripe at all other locations.
How will my new card work if I am traveling outside the United States?
Your card should work the same outside the United States. EMV chip technology is supported in 80 foreign countries, including Canada, most of Europe, Latin America and Asia. To be safe, always call the credit union to advise us that you will be using your card while traveling abroad.
More on EMV Technology
What are the benefits of EMV technology?
There are many benefits of EMV, namely the fraud deterrent technology. Another benefit is the reduction in debit card fraud resulting from counterfeit cards.
Why are EMV chip cards more secure?
EMV chip cards are inherently more secure due to card authentication and transaction authorization features. EMV chip cards are more secure than the magnetic stripe cards currently used in the United States because they have the ability to encrypt data. This means that only authorized users can access your information. Having encryption technology in place makes it difficult for fraudsters to access or use information stored on your card, making it very challenging to create counterfeit cards. These capabilities help protect against card fraud and provide an enhanced level of comfort when making purchases.
Can my chip card protect me against fraud when I make purchases online?
No, EMV chip cards are designed to reduce card-present fraud. While there is no foolproof way to protect against online fraud, you should always verify that the website you are using is secure. Two ways to verify the authenticity of the website is to ensure that –when you go to make a purchase- there is a yellow lock symbol in the lower right-hand corner of the page, and an “s” at the end of the “http:” in the URL address line in your browser. If you do not see these indicators, leave the page right away.
