A Major Victory for Credit Unions – And for You!

Dear Members,

We’re thrilled to share some exciting news: the credit union not-for-profit tax status has officially crossed the finish line as part of the recently passed “Big Beautiful Bill” signed into law by the President. This marks a major win for credit unions across the country—including WPCCU—and most importantly, for you, our valued member.

We extend our deepest gratitude to our elected officials and everyone who championed this effort. Your support helped keep the credit union tax status front and center for lawmakers. Thanks to Congress’s continued recognition of the vital role credit unions play in the financial well-being of millions of Americans, the not-for-profit exemption remains intact—preserving the credit union difference.

It’s important to clarify that this exemption applies specifically to federal income tax. As a not-for-profit, member-owned financial cooperative, WPCCU remains exempt from federal income taxes—but like other businesses, we still pay payroll, property, and various state and local taxes.

This victory allows WPCCU to stay focused on what matters most: you, our members. We will continue to reinvest our earnings to offer higher savings rates, lower loan rates, and enhanced services that support your financial success.

This achievement was made possible by the tireless advocacy of credit unions and their supporters nationwide. The “Don’t Tax My Credit Union” grassroots campaign mobilized over 861,000 letters to lawmakers, generated 128 million ad impressions, and activated more than 191,000 advocates. Additionally, a letter to U.S. senators—signed by over 750 credit union leaders—along with coordinated outreach from America’s Credit Unions, made a powerful case for preserving our tax-exempt status and underscored the impact credit unions have on more than 142 million Americans.

We sincerely thank you for your continued loyalty to WPCCU. This win is a reminder of what we can accomplish together—and it ensures that we can keep doing what we do best: serving our communities and putting members first, not profits.

With gratitude,

Mike Tufegdzich
