The Founder of Email
Ray Tomlinson, an American computer scientist, was credited as the inventor of the first email program. Email messages were shared on the ARPANET, the predecessor of the modern Internet. The first message was sent in 1969 as a way to securely share resources among researchers.
While people weren’t thinking about email security over 50 years ago, sending and receiving messages today isn’t always safe because they may lack encryption, be intercepted in transit, email accounts can be hacked, and more.
We encourage you to learn about important email tips below.
Email Security Tips
Other security concerns with email include phishing and scams. Read on to learn about typical phishing scams and how to stay safe.
- Emails can be deceptive. Beware of emails that are “too good to be true.” Be sure to verify offers and special pricing with the business directly.
- Emails can have suspicious links. Always check the URL by hovering over the web address link before clicking it. Phishing emails may contain a link that leads to a dangerous website.
- Emails can impersonate others. Scammers may send emails that seem to come from a reputable business to gain access to your accounts and personal information.
Please beware of solicitors who ask for sensitive information as they pose as WPCCU representatives. Don't trust Caller ID as phone numbers can be spoofed and may not be from the business they're calling from, including WPCCU. If you receive an email or text message, phone call or any other forms of solicitation requesting your personal information, please contact Water and Power Community Credit Union immediately: 800-300-9728 or 213-580-1600.
